Moving to Latvia and want to bring your car without paying import taxes?
Good news! 🚗
If you're moving to Latvia permanently from a country outside the European Union, such as the UK, Norway, Switzerland, or Ukraine, you may be able to bring your personal car with you without paying customs duty or VAT.
However, there are a few important conditions:
6 months – You must have owned and personally used the car for at least 6 months before moving.
12 months – You must have lived outside the European Union for at least 12 consecutive months before relocating.
12 months after moving – You have up to 12 months after establishing your residence in Latvia to import your car with full relief from customs duty and VAT.
12 months after customs clearance – You cannot sell, give away, rent out, or transfer the car to someone else without complying with customs requirements. The car is intended for your personal use.
And one more important tip!
Before importing your car, we recommend contacting CSDD (Latvia's Road Traffic Safety Directorate) to check whether your vehicle meets European technical requirements and can be registered in Latvia.
